ABOUT ACTION AGAINST HUNGER

Action Against Hunger implements humanitarian and development programmes addressing hunger, malnutrition, health, WASH, livelihoods and social protection.

JOB SUMMARY

The WASH Officer will oversee hygiene-promotion and NFI-distribution activities in Nguru, Yobe State.

The position will support assessments, public-health promotion, technical capacity building, monitoring, community mobilisation and staff supervision.

Reports to: Programme Manager.

Proposed Start Date: October 2026.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead multi-sector rapid WASH needs assessments.
  • Analyse assessment findings and public-health risks.
  • Develop context-specific hygiene-promotion strategies.
  • Implement WASH Emergency approaches.
  • Support implementation of BabyWASH approaches.
  • Adapt hygiene-promotion training materials.
  • Adapt IEC materials to local contexts.
  • Develop communication plans appropriate to target groups.
  • Establish activity-monitoring mechanisms.
  • Continuously assess changing emergency WASH needs.
  • Plan beneficiary selection and registration.
  • Lead distribution of Non-Food Items.
  • Coordinate with MEAL teams to conduct post-distribution monitoring.
  • Ensure WASH activities meet SPHERE minimum standards.
  • Ensure technical activities reflect the needs and preferences of different target groups.
  • Identify and minimise potential public-health hazards.
  • Ensure hygiene-promotion team members understand programme strategy.
  • Prepare training tools on technical WASH topics.
  • Conduct training for internal staff.
  • Conduct training for community and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with development of technical hygiene-promotion guidelines and tools.
  • Conduct WASH FIT assessments in supported health facilities.
  • Identify implementation areas requiring improvement.
  • Document programme lessons learned.
  • Work closely with the WASH Programme Manager throughout planning and implementation.
  • Represent Action Against Hunger at local WASH coordination meetings where assigned.
  • Participate in relevant technical working groups.
  • Work with nutrition and health teams to integrate WASH activities.
  • Supervise staff under direct responsibility.
  • Set performance objectives for staff.
  • Conduct performance reviews.
  • Identify capacity-building needs.
  • Promote coordination among WASH technical team members.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Hygiene and Sanitation or another relevant field.
  • Minimum two years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in WASH and hygiene promotion.
  • Community-engagement experience.
  • Capacity-building or training experience.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook proficiency.
  • Ability to live and travel in remote locations.
  • Fluency in English and Hausa.
  • Kanuri proficiency is required for the role.
  • Strong communication, teamwork and stakeholder-engagement skills.
