ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

North East Youth Initiative for Development is a national non-governmental, nonprofit humanitarian and development organization established in 2013 and headquartered in Damaturu, Yobe State. It works across North-East, North-West and North-Central Nigeria in food security and livelihoods, health and nutrition, WASH, education, protection, shelter, governance, human rights and community empowerment.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The position supports SAHaRA Phase IV, a twelve-month humanitarian action implemented by Caritas Germany and consortium partners in Northeast and Northwest Nigeria. The project provides integrated, shock-responsive assistance in Magumeri, Gwoza, Kaga, Madagali and Daura Local Government Areas across Borno, Adamawa and Katsina States.

The project targets vulnerable communities through multipurpose cash assistance, WASH infrastructure rehabilitation and construction, protection mainstreaming and community accountability. It prioritizes safe, accessible and inclusive services for women, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

ROLE PURPOSE

The WASH Officer will support delivery of safe and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene interventions in Madagali LGA. The officer will help ensure that community WASH facilities and hygiene-promotion activities are implemented effectively and respond to public-health needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

WATER

  • Support access to safe, clean and sustainable water supplies.
  • Support installation, rehabilitation, maintenance and monitoring of water systems.
  • Monitor the functionality and appropriate use of supported water facilities.
  • Coordinate with communities and project stakeholders concerning water-access needs.

SANITATION

  • Promote safe sanitation practices within participating communities.
  • Support construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of sanitation facilities.
  • Monitor the condition and use of sanitation infrastructure.
  • Identify sanitation gaps and report required corrective action.

HYGIENE PROMOTION

  • Lead or support community hygiene-promotion activities.
  • Educate communities concerning disease prevention and safe hygiene practices.
  • Work with community structures to improve participation and ownership.
  • Support inclusive access for women, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
  • Contribute to accountability and community-feedback mechanisms.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
