ABOUT IITA

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is recruiting a Training Officer to support the delivery of inclusive agricultural and vocational capacity-building activities in Jigawa State.

JOB SUMMARY

The Training Officer will coordinate and deliver practical training that equips participants with agricultural, agribusiness and employability skills. The role will assess learning needs, organise cohorts and facilitators, support inclusive participation, monitor progress and connect trainees with mentoring, finance, markets and work opportunities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct training-needs assessments and adapt curricula and learning materials to participant and local value-chain needs.
  • Prepare training schedules and coordinate cohorts, venues, facilitators, mentors, participants, materials and equipment.
  • Identify, engage and coordinate qualified facilitators and mentors.
  • Oversee practical training activities delivered through Youth Agribusiness Parks and other approved sites.
  • Support inclusive participation by young people, women, persons with disabilities and internally displaced persons.
  • Coordinate STEP-related training activities with participating secondary schools.
  • Monitor attendance, learner progress and completion, and provide accurate data to monitoring and evaluation teams.
  • Organise the distribution and documentation of training materials, inputs and approved starter kits.
  • Link participants to mentorship, producer or enterprise clusters, financial services, markets and workforce opportunities where applicable.
  • Collect participant feedback, document outcomes and prepare timely activity and progress reports.
  • Apply safeguarding, gender-inclusion, health and safety requirements across training activities.
  • Travel regularly within the state to support implementation and quality assurance.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Extension, Agribusiness, Education or a related field.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in agricultural training, extension, vocational education or youth capacity building.
  • Practical knowledge of at least one priority value chain: poultry, aquaculture, horticulture, rice, maize or cassava.
  • Understanding of adult-learning methods and practical, competency-based training.
  • Experience working with diverse groups, including youth, women, persons with disabilities or displaced participants.
  • Strong facilitation, coaching, mentoring and stakeholder-coordination skills.
  • Ability to maintain training records, monitor progress and prepare reports.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with the local context and relevant languages.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within the state.
