Position Description & Requirements

Under the direct supervision of the Stabilization Center Medical Doctor, the Stabilization Center Nurse will support the nutritional rehabilitation and clinical management of admitted children experiencing severe acute malnutrition with medical complications.

The Nurse will provide prescribed treatment, therapeutic feeding, routine medication, specialised medicines, nursing care and health and nutrition counselling. All services must comply with protocols and guidelines established by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and PUI.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Reception and Admission

  • Welcome patients and caregivers to the health facility.
  • Conduct triage procedures for newly arriving patients.
  • Complete admissions in accordance with approved Stabilization Center protocols.
  • Obtain and document relevant patient information.
  • Explain admission and treatment procedures to caregivers.

Clinical and Nursing Care

  • Support the timely identification and treatment of medical complications associated with severe acute malnutrition.
  • Work closely with physicians to provide appropriate clinical care.
  • Administer prescribed medicines, intravenous medication and other treatments.
  • Provide guidance to caregivers concerning medication and treatment schedules.
  • Monitor the condition and progress of admitted patients.
  • Conduct and record routine observations and vital signs.
  • Immediately report significant changes in a patient’s condition.
  • Participate in daily ward rounds with physicians.
  • Update patient cards following ward rounds, medication administration, examinations and clinical procedures.
  • Ensure that prescribed treatment, observations and procedures are properly implemented and documented.
  • Communicate relevant patient information and laboratory results to the responsible doctor.
  • Collect blood samples and support other clinical procedures where required.
  • Provide appropriate nursing care to admitted children.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living while receiving treatment.
  • Maintain patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality.

Nutrition Rehabilitation

  • Supervise the provision of therapeutic feeds.
  • Ensure children receive therapeutic feeds at the intervals prescribed by the treatment protocol.
  • Monitor each patient’s response to therapeutic feeding.
  • Ensure feeding schedules and quantities are properly recorded.
  • Support caregivers with appropriate infant and young-child feeding information.
  • Link caregivers with community-based infant and young-child feeding teams.
  • Provide health and nutrition counselling to patients and caregivers.
  • Identify feeding difficulties and report them to the medical team.
  • Support appropriate transition between different treatment phases.

Referral and Continuity of Care

  • Facilitate the timely referral of complicated severe acute malnutrition cases from outpatient therapeutic programmes to the Stabilization Center.
  • Support the referral of stabilised patients from the Stabilization Center to appropriate outpatient services.
  • Accompany referred patients when required.
  • Ensure referral information is complete and properly communicated.
  • Support follow-up and continuity of care between facilities and community programmes.

Team Management and Coordination

  • Supervise Stabilization Center Nutrition Feeding Assistants.
  • Provide regular mentoring and on-the-job training to feeding assistants.
  • Ensure staff understand and follow treatment and feeding protocols.
  • Coordinate daily patient-management activities with doctors and other health workers.
  • Participate in relevant clinical, nutrition and coordination meetings.
  • Communicate implementation challenges to the responsible supervisor.
  • Promote effective teamwork within the Stabilization Center.

Infection Prevention and Work Environment

  • Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
  • Follow infection-prevention and control procedures.
  • Comply with medication-administration and storage procedures.
  • Comply with regulations relating to controlled medicines.
  • Ensure clinical and nutrition equipment is used appropriately.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment and report damage or shortages.
  • Maintain updated equipment and supply inventories.
  • Support safe waste-management and hygiene practices in the ward.

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Record all patient admissions, discharges, transfers and deaths.
  • Maintain patient registers, treatment records and clinical documentation.
  • Track the consumption of medicines, therapeutic foods and other consumables.
  • Prepare and submit consumption reports to the responsible physician or supervisor.
  • Collect, compile and analyse Stabilization Center activity data.
  • Prepare accurate and timely activity reports.
  • Report difficulties, delays, stock shortages and other implementation concerns.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and secure handling of patient information.

Protection and Professional Conduct

  • Treat patients, caregivers and community members respectfully.
  • Respect the rights of patients and their attendants.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Follow PUI’s code of conduct and humanitarian principles.
  • Perform other related responsibilities according to programme needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma in Clinical Nursing or a higher nursing qualification.
  • Valid professional nursing registration or practising licence where required.
  • Minimum of two years of progressive experience in nutrition-related activities.
  • Significant experience managing complicated severe acute malnutrition cases in a Stabilization Center.
  • Demonstrated understanding of inpatient severe acute malnutrition treatment protocols.
  • Previous experience implementing Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition programmes is an advantage.
  • Previous experience working with humanitarian organisations is an advantage.
  • Good command of spoken and written English.
  • Fluency in Hausa or another relevant local language.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
