ABOUT JHPIEGO
Jhpiego is an international non-profit health organisation affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. It supports governments and healthcare providers to improve health services for women, newborns, children and families.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Jhpiego and its partners will implement a United States Department of State-funded programme designed to reduce maternal, infant and child deaths caused by malaria.
The programme will integrate malaria, maternal, newborn and child health, tuberculosis and HIV screening across antenatal, delivery, postnatal, infant and child-health services.

JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Malaria Technical Advisor will provide overall technical leadership and guidance for integrated malaria service-delivery interventions.
The successful candidate will ensure that programme activities align with national policies, global standards and recognised public-health practices.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide technical leadership as a member of the project’s core management team.
- Guide the implementation of integrated malaria, maternal, newborn and child health, HIV and tuberculosis services.
- Ensure that activities comply with national policies, technical guidelines and global good practices.
- Collaborate with federal and state government institutions, professional associations and implementing partners.
- Advise programme teams on proven malaria interventions and opportunities for knowledge exchange.
- Support the development and dissemination of technical standards, tools, guidance documents and reports.
- Provide technical support to State Malaria Technical Advisors and State Malaria Technical Officers.
- Support timely implementation of all approved project activities.
- Coordinate programme participation in World Malaria Day and maternal, newborn and child-health weeks.
- Work with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and State Primary Health Care Development Agencies.
- Support mentoring for medical officers, nurses, midwives, community health extension workers and community health workers.
- Strengthen malaria case management at community and health-facility levels.
- Promote high-quality malaria services for pregnant women, infants and children.
- Support workforce development, quality improvement, monitoring and evaluation.
- Maintain relationships with senior government officials, donors, NGOs and professional networks.
- Contribute to programme reports, technical publications and knowledge-management products.
- Support the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
- Undertake national travel when required.
- Perform other responsibilities assigned by programme leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Medical degree in Medicine or Nursing, or a Master’s degree in Public Health.
- Minimum of eight years of experience implementing malaria programmes.
- Experience in community malaria programming or malaria in pregnancy.
- At least five years of experience managing large donor-funded health projects valued at $10 million or more annually.
- Experience designing and implementing international or overseas health projects.
- Previous malaria programme experience in Africa is required, with Nigeria experience preferred.
- Certification as a malaria case-management Master Trainer.
- Demonstrated experience training and mentoring healthcare workers.
- Strong experience in organisational and individual capacity strengthening.
- Experience providing malaria services at community, clinical and subnational levels.
- Strong understanding of Nigeria’s public-health system.
- Familiarity with UNITAID management and reporting procedures.
- Experience producing technical reports, knowledge products or peer-reviewed publications.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Strong malaria technical and programme-leadership skills.
- Knowledge of integrated health-service delivery.
- Expertise in at least two or three areas such as service delivery, workforce development, quality improvement or monitoring and evaluation.
- Strong stakeholder-management and partnership-building abilities.
- Excellent analytical, presentation and technical-writing skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively in multicultural and low-resource environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Willingness to travel within Nigeria.
