JOB SUMMARY

The Safeguarding Intern will work closely with the Country Safeguarding and Protection from Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse Manager to support compliance with Plan International’s safeguarding policies, standards and procedures.

The intern will support Plan International’s departments and partners to understand and effectively implement safeguarding and PSHEA policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Capacity Building

  • Support the delivery of safeguarding training for staff, associates and visitors.
  • Help build commitment to safeguarding and minimise the risk of abuse to children and programme participants.
  • Support the development and distribution of information, education and communication materials on safeguarding and PSHEA.
  • Assist with regular safeguarding spot checks involving partners and communities.
  • Support annual internal audits of safeguarding and PSHEA policy implementation.
  • Provide safeguarding and PSHEA input during programme development and implementation.
  • Support programme teams to apply safe programming standards throughout the programme cycle.

Reporting and Responding

  • Serve as a safeguarding focal point for the humanitarian response programme.
  • Work with safeguarding focal persons in programme units to document and report safeguarding allegations.
  • Support the development and dissemination of safeguarding reporting and referral pathways.

Safeguarding Mainstreaming

  • Support management in identifying and reducing safeguarding risks, including online safeguarding risks.
  • Promote the integration of safeguarding and PSHEA standards across programmes and operational activities.

Knowledge Management and Monitoring

  • Maintain a central record of safeguarding and PSHEA implementation activities across field offices.
  • Support the collection and organisation of safeguarding monitoring information.
  • Discuss challenges and concerns regarding safeguarding and PSHEA implementation with the supervisor.
  • Support the development of appropriate actions to address identified safeguarding concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • University degree or equivalent qualification in Education, Social Sciences, Social Work, Psychology or a related field.
  • Fresh graduate in a relevant discipline with up to one year of work experience in the development sector.
  • Exposure to safeguarding and PSHEA policies and practices within an NGO or international NGO setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge or experience in protection, gender-based violence or gender programming is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the Nigerian Child Rights Act, Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, child protection and GBV policies and practices.
  • Experience working in emergency settings is desirable.
  • Experience working with internally displaced persons and other vulnerable populations is an advantage.
  • Previous experience providing services to children at risk or survivors of abuse, exploitation and violence is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Workspace.
