ROLE PURPOSE
The Safety & Security Officer will monitor and manage security risks affecting programme delivery. The post holder will gather and verify security information, assess clinics and operational facilities, monitor compliance with procedures, document incidents and provide timely recommendations that help staff operate safely.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff Communication and Clinic Monitoring
- Communicate regularly with Field Managers and Field Officers.
- Contact high- and medium-risk clinics for security updates, prioritising Funtua Zone facilities.
- Confirm that Field Officers receive and understand security advisories.
- Document special reports from staff and escalate relevant information to the Security Manager.
- Verify security incidents reported by staff and obtain further details when necessary.
Stakeholder Communication
- Maintain direct contact with security networks, community gatekeepers and other relevant stakeholders.
- Use clinic schedules to obtain updates from stakeholders before clinic days.
- Record information indicating heightened risk and alert the Security Manager promptly.
- Help determine whether planned staff visits can proceed safely.
Incident Review and Reporting
- Review reported low-risk security incidents and contact affected staff for clarification.
- Provide practical recommendations and assign follow-up actions to relevant Field Managers.
- Draft security reports and monitor whether assigned actions have been completed.
- Take initial incident-management steps and immediately escalate critical incidents.
- Perform delegated duties during critical incidents under the Security Manager’s direction.
Security Assessments and Training
- Support assessments of operational clinics and LGAs through field visits and information checks.
- Assess hotels, training venues and car-hire vendors used for programme activities.
- Accompany Field Officers to clinics to observe compliance and identify training gaps.
- Support decisions on security training and help deliver approved training.
- Assist with security arrangements for expatriate visits to Nigeria.
- Undertake frequent assessment missions, including assignments made at short notice.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- BSc or equivalent qualification in a Social Sciences discipline.
- At least two years of experience in a similar security role with an NGO.
- Former military or paramilitary experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct security assessments and contextual analysis.
- Strong oral and written communication and report-writing skills.
- Excellent English and Hausa; knowledge of relevant local dialects is an advantage.
- Strong organisation, time management, prioritisation and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing humanitarian and operational conditions.
- Sound cultural awareness and ability to work in a multicultural and multiethnic environment.
- Strong responsiveness to email and telephone requests.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, internet browsers, smartphones and general ICT.
- Experience with Google Docs, Google Sheets or AppSheet is an advantage.
