ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization providing emergency assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters and exclusion from healthcare.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Radio Operator will operate telecommunications equipment and maintain reliable communication between MSF teams, vehicles and operational locations in accordance with security and communication procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate radio, telephone and other approved communications equipment.
  • Receive, record and transmit operational messages accurately and promptly.
  • Maintain scheduled radio contact with teams and vehicles.
  • Monitor staff and vehicle movements and report delays or communication failures.
  • Keep complete radio logs, contact lists and communication records.
  • Report technical faults and assist with basic equipment checks.
  • Follow confidentiality, security and emergency-communication procedures.
  • Provide relevant information to supervisors during incidents or emergencies.
  • Undertake other related duties assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • HND, bachelor’s degree or relevant diploma in Information and Communication Technology, Computer Science or another relevant discipline.
  • At least two years of experience as a radio operator or in a closely related communications role.
  • Previous humanitarian or emergency-response experience is an advantage.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to use radio and telecommunications equipment.
  • Clear verbal communication and accurate message recording.
  • Computer literacy and careful record management.
  • Ability to remain calm and follow procedures during emergencies.
  • English is essential.
  • Local-language ability and knowledge of the operational context are advantages.
