Position: Nurse

Location: Maiduguri, Borno State

Employment Type: Full-time, onsite

Salary Range: ₦500,000–₦750,000 monthly

Reporting Line: Medical Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse will provide nursing care to patients in the Cholera Treatment Unit and support the supervision of personnel working in the unit and Oral Rehydration Point.

The successful candidate will assist with triage, patient monitoring, treatment, infection prevention, health education, reporting and management of nursing supplies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Triage

  • Receive and triage patients presenting at the Cholera Treatment Unit.
  • Record vital signs and relevant patient information.
  • Assess and classify dehydration status.
  • Register patients and assign appropriate identification numbers.
  • Refer medical emergencies immediately to the Medical Doctor.
  • Support the doctor during assessment and treatment.
  • Prioritise severely ill patients.

Nursing and Treatment Support

  • Administer oral rehydration solution.
  • Assist with intravenous-fluid treatment.
  • Monitor treatment response and changes in patients’ condition.
  • Maintain close observation of patients in treatment and recovery areas.
  • Administer prescribed medication and injections.
  • Conduct wound care and dressing.
  • Perform approved rapid diagnostic testing where required.
  • Ensure clinical procedures comply with organisational protocols.
  • Maintain complete and accurate nursing records.

Staff Supervision

  • Support the supervision of assigned State Ministry of Health personnel.
  • Ensure clinical personnel apply approved procedures.
  • Provide practical support and guidance to junior staff.
  • Participate in daily shift handovers.
  • Report clinical-performance gaps to the Medical Supervisor.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Follow strict hand-hygiene, PPE and chlorine-use requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate isolation of suspected and confirmed cases.
  • Support daily environmental cleaning and decontamination.
  • Ensure medical equipment is cleaned, disinfected and sterilised.
  • Maintain clean treatment and observation areas.
  • Support safe medical-waste disposal.
  • Immediately report IPC breaches.

Health Promotion

  • Conduct health-education sessions for patients and caregivers.
  • Explain cholera prevention through safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
  • Demonstrate correct handwashing.
  • Explain the importance of early treatment.
  • Teach patients and caregivers how to use ORS appropriately.
  • Explain danger signs and discharge instructions.

Data and Supplies

  • Record all patient data in approved registers and reporting forms.
  • Compile admissions, discharges, deaths and referral information.
  • Support weekly reporting and epidemiological data entry.
  • Report unusual clinical trends.
  • Monitor nursing supplies and consumables.
  • Participate in stock counts and organisation of medical materials.
  • Support the setup and maintenance of treatment areas.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Valid professional registration and practising licence.
  • At least three years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in emergency health, humanitarian work or health-facility supervision.
  • Experience in infectious-disease or outbreak response is desirable.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams is an advantage.
  • Additional relevant health certification is desirable.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong nursing and patient-monitoring ability.
  • Knowledge of dehydration assessment and cholera treatment.
  • Good infection-prevention knowledge.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage emergencies.
  • Strong communication and health-education skills.
  • Accurate record-keeping and reporting.
  • Ability to work flexible or irregular hours.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Hausa or Kanuri is an advantage.
