JOB DETAILS

Position: Nurse

Location: Damboa, Borno State

Employment Type: Full-time, onsite

Salary Range: ₦500,000–₦750,000 monthly

Reporting Line: Medical Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse will provide quality nursing care in the Cholera Treatment Unit and Oral Rehydration Point.

The position will support patient triage, dehydration assessment, treatment, monitoring, infection prevention, health education, medical documentation and daily reporting.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Treatment-Unit Supervision

  • Support the supervision of State Ministry of Health staff working in the treatment unit and Oral Rehydration Point.
  • Ensure staff apply the correct clinical guidelines and procedures.
  • Collect daily activity data and report to the Medical Supervisor.
  • Support effective handovers between nursing shifts.
  • Immediately report clinical or operational concerns.

Triage and Patient Registration

  • Receive and triage all patients presenting at the treatment unit.
  • Measure and record temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and weight where applicable.
  • Assess and classify dehydration status.
  • Assign patient-identification numbers.
  • Ensure patients are properly registered.
  • Immediately refer severe or emergency cases to the Medical Doctor.
  • Support the doctor with patient assessment and monitoring.

Treatment and Nursing Care

  • Administer oral rehydration solution.
  • Assist with intravenous-fluid administration under appropriate supervision.
  • Monitor patients’ clinical condition and response to treatment.
  • Report any deterioration immediately.
  • Apply approved cholera-treatment protocols.
  • Observe patients closely in treatment and recovery areas.
  • Administer prescribed injections.
  • Conduct wound care and dressing.
  • Perform approved rapid diagnostic tests where indicated.
  • Maintain accurate nursing and treatment records.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Observe strict hand-hygiene and PPE requirements.
  • Support appropriate chlorine preparation and use.
  • Ensure patients are properly isolated.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of treatment and observation areas.
  • Clean, disinfect and sterilise medical equipment.
  • Participate in environmental decontamination.
  • Ensure medical waste is safely handled and disposed of.
  • Report infection-prevention concerns immediately.

Health Education

  • Educate patients and caregivers about cholera prevention.
  • Explain the importance of safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
  • Demonstrate correct handwashing practices.
  • Explain the importance of early treatment and appropriate ORS use.
  • Inform caregivers about danger signs and when to seek care.
  • Explain discharge instructions clearly.

Data and Reporting

  • Record patient information accurately in registers and approved forms.
  • Compile data on admissions, discharges, deaths and referrals.
  • Support weekly data entry and epidemiological reporting.
  • Report unusual increases in patient numbers, severe cases or deaths.
  • Submit activity reports to the Medical Doctor or Medical Supervisor.
  • Protect the confidentiality of patient information.

Logistics and Coordination

  • Support the setup of triage, ORS, intravenous-treatment and recovery areas.
  • Monitor nursing supplies and consumables.
  • Participate in daily and weekly stock counts.
  • Organise medical supplies appropriately.
  • Participate in daily briefings, medical meetings and security updates.
  • Attend required training and refresher sessions.
  • Immediately report security problems.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Valid Nursing and Midwifery Council registration and practising licence.
  • At least three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in humanitarian health, emergency response or health-facility supervision.
  • Experience in clinical care and infectious-disease outbreak response.
  • Experience supporting or supervising multidisciplinary personnel is an advantage.
  • Additional health-related certification is desirable.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong patient-care and triage skills.
  • Knowledge of cholera case management.
  • Good understanding of infection prevention and control.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Good communication and health-education skills.
  • Accurate clinical documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to work respectfully with patients and caregivers.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Knowledge of Hausa or Kanuri is an advantage.
