Position Description & Requirements

JOB SUMMARY

UNICEF Nigeria is engaging three national consultants for a one-month remote assignment to translate an Adolescent Girls Storybook and accompanying multimedia content from English into Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. The work must preserve the storybook’s meaning, tone, cultural sensitivity, child-rights framing and adolescent-friendly storytelling style.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in an inception meeting and submit a translation approach, workplan, glossary structure and quality-assurance plan.
  • Translate the complete storybook into the relevant target language while maintaining the original meaning, voice and emotional tone.
  • Adapt idioms and expressions appropriately without changing the intended message.
  • Apply consistent gender-responsive, child-rights and safeguarding terminology.
  • Edit and proofread the translated manuscript, incorporate UNICEF feedback and maintain clear version control.
  • Deliver publication-ready manuscripts and review the designed version for linguistic accuracy, formatting and readability.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, Nigerian Languages, English, Communication, Literature, Education, Development Studies, Gender Studies or a related field.
  • At least five years of professional experience in translation, localization, editing or multilingual publishing.
  • Proven experience translating educational, adolescent, child or social-development materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate from English into Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo.
  • Fluency in English and native or near-native proficiency in one target language.
