Première Urgence Internationale is an international, non-profit, non-political and non-religious humanitarian organisation. PUI assists people affected by armed conflict, displacement, natural disasters and economic crises by responding to their urgent health, nutrition, protection and other essential needs.

PUI has operated in Nigeria since 2016 and currently supports health facilities and nutrition-treatment services, including outpatient therapeutic programmes and stabilisation centres.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the MHPSS Supervisor, technical supervision of the Health and Nutrition Project Manager and line management of the health-facility Medical Officer, the Mother Baby Corner Nurse will manage and develop activities within the Mother and Baby Corner established in supported health facilities, outpatient therapeutic programmes and stabilisation centres.

The position will provide psychosocial, health, nutrition and early-childhood support to mothers, caregivers and infants. The Nurse will also collaborate with health and nutrition teams to integrate Mother Baby Corner activities into facility services and submit regular activity reports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote, protect and advocate for appropriate maternal, infant and young-child nutrition practices.
  • Plan and deliver Mother Baby Corner activities for mothers, caregivers, babies and young children.
  • Welcome beneficiaries and provide individual consultations to newly registered participants.
  • Conduct group psychoeducation sessions for mothers and caregivers.
  • Facilitate structured mother-and-child interaction activities.
  • Conduct baby-bathing, baby-massage and mother-and-infant play sessions.
  • Provide basic psychosocial support to mothers and caregivers.
  • Assess beneficiaries for signs of mild or moderate psychological distress.
  • Identify and refer beneficiaries requiring specialised mental-health or psychosocial support.
  • Promote positive childcare practices that complement the medical and nutritional treatment of children.
  • Provide health and nutrition information to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and caregivers.
  • Support maternal, infant and young-child nutrition counselling activities.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of Mother Baby Corner activities.
  • Work with health and nutrition staff to integrate Mother Baby Corner services into supported facilities.
  • Participate in planning activities according to beneficiary needs and operational feasibility.
  • Ensure that activities follow applicable international care-practice standards.
  • Create a safe, welcoming and child-friendly environment for mothers and children.
  • Support entertainment and recreational activities for children and caregivers.
  • Monitor the psychological and general well-being of participating mothers and children.
  • Promote Mother Baby Corner services among beneficiaries and community stakeholders.
  • Explain the Mother Baby Corner approach to beneficiaries, staff and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Supervise and support Mother Baby Corner Facilitators where applicable.
  • Provide on-the-job training and guidance to assigned facilitators.
  • Participate in refresher training, supervision and technical-support sessions.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and beneficiary confidentiality.
  • Complete daily activity, attendance, referral and data-collection forms.
  • Enter collected information into the appropriate reporting systems each week.
  • Monitor activity implementation and promptly report identified challenges.
  • Prepare regular activity reports for the base and coordination offices.
  • Participate in weekly MHPSS supervision and on-the-job training meetings.
  • Attend relevant MHPSS, Psychological First Aid, nutrition and health training organised by PUI.
  • Support additional health, nutrition and psychosocial activities when requested by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Trained Nurse, mental-health social worker, counsellor, psychologist or another relevant paramedical professional.
  • Professional experience or training related to nutrition programming.
  • Previous experience implementing nutrition programmes such as OTP, Stabilisation Centre or Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme activities.
  • Training or practical experience in psychosocial support is desirable.
  • Training in community nutrition and maternal, infant and young-child nutrition counselling is desirable.
  • Previous experience working in the humanitarian sector is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with local community structures and health-service systems.
  • Experience supporting mothers, babies and young children.
  • Ability to identify and refer beneficiaries experiencing psychological distress.
  • Good command of spoken and written English.
  • Fluency in Hausa is required.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful environments.
  • Willingness to travel between supported health facilities and safe spaces when required.
