Position Description & Requirements

ORGANIZATION AND ROLE BACKGROUND

International Medical Corps delivers lifesaving health services and strengthens health systems in crisis-affected settings. This local-national midwifery position supports maternal, obstetric and newborn care.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Midwife will provide maternal and newborn services for women and babies before, during and after pregnancy and delivery in accordance with International Medical Corps protocols and accepted clinical standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies, safe delivery, BEmONC/CEmONC, essential newborn care and STI management.
  • Provide clinical care for survivors of violence against women and girls within applicable protocols.
  • Assess referral of pregnant women from traditional birth attendants to supported services.
  • Maintain universal precautions, hygiene and sterilization standards.
  • Clean and conduct minor maintenance of biomedical equipment and report malfunctions.
  • Monitor maternity medicines, consumables and equipment and prepare timely orders.
  • Protect patient privacy and confidentiality and supervise admission and hospitalization procedures.
  • Conduct skilled deliveries independently and manage obstetric emergencies according to national and international protocols.
  • Supervise appropriate use of medicines, facilities and obstetric materials.
  • Provide quality outpatient and inpatient care, health education and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Ensure accurate daily documentation and data quality for ANC, admission, delivery, PNC, family-planning, outpatient, discharge and referral records.
  • Support integrated care for nutritionally at-risk infants and their mothers, including mental-health and health-promotion support.
  • Provide breastfeeding counselling on positioning, attachment, duration, frequency and effective suckling.
  • Submit accurate and timely reports.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of a clinical midwifery education programme with a General Nursing and Midwifery Certificate.
  • Valid licence from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria or a comparable accrediting body.
  • At least two years of clinical experience as a professional midwife in a low-resource setting.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and newborn care.
  • Skilled delivery and obstetric-emergency management.
  • BEmONC and CEmONC services.
  • Infection prevention, sterilization and clinical documentation.
  • Breastfeeding counselling and integrated maternal–infant support.
  • English and relevant local languages are mandatory.
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel and internet use.
