ABOUT PREMIÈRE URGENCE INTERNATIONALE

Première Urgence Internationale (PUI) is an international humanitarian organisation providing emergency assistance to populations affected by conflict, displacement, marginalisation, natural disasters and other humanitarian crises.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Health and Nutrition Supervisor, the Midwife will provide Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and Sexual and Reproductive Health services.

The position will provide antenatal care, delivery support, postnatal care, family-planning services, reproductive-health support, health education and referrals in line with PUI protocols and recognised clinical standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare consultation rooms, medical supplies and delivery materials before clinical activities begin.
  • Ensure required infection-prevention materials and obstetric supplies are available.
  • Conduct antenatal consultations for pregnant women according to approved protocols.
  • Take relevant maternal history and assess the health condition of pregnant women.
  • Conduct appropriate screening and identify maternal or foetal risk factors.
  • Recognise pregnancy danger signs and escalate complicated cases.
  • Verify tetanus vaccination status of pregnant women.
  • Provide appropriate preventive and prophylactic treatment according to protocols.
  • Conduct normal deliveries in accordance with safe-delivery procedures and hygiene standards.
  • Monitor women during labour and recognise signs requiring urgent intervention.
  • Provide immediate newborn care after delivery.
  • Identify obstetric or neonatal complications requiring referral.
  • Conduct postnatal consultations during the six weeks following delivery.
  • Assess maternal recovery and identify post-delivery complications.
  • Monitor newborn well-being and counsel mothers on appropriate care.
  • Provide appropriate treatment within the Midwife’s scope of practice.
  • Refer women and newborns requiring secondary or specialist care.
  • Conduct family-planning consultations.
  • Provide confidential family-planning counselling.
  • Explain contraceptive options and support informed decision-making.
  • Support management of Sexual and Reproductive Health emergencies with the Health Supervisor.
  • Identify survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
  • Coordinate appropriate medical support and referral for survivors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and a survivor-centred approach.
  • Explain diagnosis, treatment and follow-up instructions to patients.
  • Encourage treatment adherence.
  • Provide individual health-promotion counselling during consultations.
  • Conduct health-education sessions for patients and caregivers.
  • Provide information on maternal health, newborn care, breastfeeding, hygiene and family planning.

REFERRALS AND CONTINUITY OF CARE

  • Identify emergency and elective referral cases.
  • Apply PUI referral procedures.
  • Coordinate referral logistics with the Health Supervisor.
  • Support transport arrangements when required.
  • Coordinate appointments, laboratory investigations and specialist services.
  • Follow up referred patients and document referral outcomes.
  • Confirm patients receive appropriate follow-up care.
  • Identify patients requiring mental-health or psychosocial services and refer appropriately.

MEDICAL DATA AND REPORTING

  • Accurately document consultations in patient health cards.
  • Record medical history, examination findings, treatment and investigations.
  • Maintain patient-registration books.
  • Participate in daily collection of epidemiological data.
  • Monitor consumption of drugs and medical materials.
  • Support preparation of weekly medical statistics.
  • Provide clear written and verbal handover at the end of shifts.
  • Highlight critical patient cases during handover.
  • Report shortages, loss, theft or damage involving medicines or medical equipment.
  • Inform supervisors promptly of clinical and organisational concerns.
  • Participate in vaccination activities, assessments, surveys and outbreak-response activities when assigned.
  • Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
  • Support appropriate medical-waste management.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Recognised professional qualification in Midwifery.
  • Valid professional licence.
  • Applicants should be able to provide licence details and expiry date.
  • Relevant practical midwifery experience.
  • Experience providing ANC and PNC services.
  • Experience supporting labour and delivery.
  • Knowledge of maternal and newborn health.
  • Family-planning and reproductive-health knowledge.
  • Previous CBO, NGO or INGO experience is an advantage.
  • Strong patient communication and counselling ability.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • English-language proficiency.
  • Hausa-language ability is highly relevant.

SALARY

Net monthly salary: ₦472,000
