Position Description & Requirements

ORGANIZATION AND ROLE BACKGROUND

International Medical Corps delivers emergency and recovery health services in crisis-affected settings. This national medical position combines general inpatient and outpatient clinical care with lifesaving general, obstetric and gynaecological surgical services.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Surgical Medical Doctor will provide high-quality clinical care and perform surgical interventions within the doctor’s training, certification and approved scope of work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral and follow-up according to accepted standards.
  • Conduct routine and emergency procedures within the doctor’s training and certification.
  • Implement primary and secondary healthcare packages in supported facilities or mobile clinics.
  • Ensure infection prevention, sterilization and appropriate drug-use protocols are followed.
  • Monitor morbidity, mortality and disease trends and support reportable-disease and outbreak response.
  • Collect and analyse service data to improve programme plans and quality of care.
  • Provide health education and train health-facility personnel and community health workers.
  • Maintain clinical records, privacy, confidentiality and appropriate medical supplies.
  • Supervise medical personnel and advise health-facility administration on staffing, training and supply needs.
  • Assess outpatient cases requiring general, obstetric or gynaecological surgery and determine safe treatment or referral.
  • Conduct ward rounds for pre-operative, post-operative and other admitted patients.
  • Perform urgent and emergency general surgery, including appropriate trauma and war-wound interventions, in line with approved protocols.
  • Stabilize complex emergency cases and arrange timely referral.
  • Conduct common lifesaving obstetric and gynaecological procedures within the project scope.
  • Ensure the operating theatre, equipment, aseptic practice and sterilization processes meet required standards.
  • Assess training needs and strengthen operating-theatre, IPC and inpatient clinical teams.
  • Ensure appropriate post-operative orders, pain management and qualified anaesthesia support.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Medical degree with additional qualification in general surgery and/or obstetrics and gynaecology as required for practice in Nigeria.
  • At least three years of proven experience performing common lifesaving emergency general, obstetric and gynaecological surgeries.
  • Experience supervising clinical staff in a primary or secondary healthcare facility.
  • Experience training clinical personnel.
  • Managerial and leadership ability.
  • Willingness and ability to work in hardship areas with limited resources and under stress.
