JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Doctor will provide overall patient care and promote patient health and safety through triage, history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigations, diagnosis, treatment, referral and health education. The doctor will support quality clinical practice, infection prevention, medical-data use, staff learning and patient safeguarding in Borno.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide high-quality clinical care for acute and chronic conditions using available history, examination, laboratory and imaging information.
- Conduct patient rounds where assigned, document progress and ensure safe clinical handover.
- Determine when further testing or advanced care is required and initiate timely referrals.
- Lead regular case discussions and provide hands-on or classroom training to clinical staff.
- Identify staff training gaps and advocate for appropriate capacity development.
- Use approved data-collection tools and help train other staff in their use.
- Collect and analyse medical-service data to improve quality of care.
- Ensure infection-prevention and control precautions meet Ministry of Health and international standards.
- Participate in 24-hour service delivery and shift schedules where applicable.
- Follow international protocols for patient assessment, diagnosis and prescribing.
- Supervise clinical personnel and support recruitment when directed.
- Provide health education on diagnoses, nutrition, physical activity, hygiene, vaccination and disease prevention.
- Maintain complete clinical records and support restocking of essential medicines, consumables and supplies.
- Protect patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Report Code of Conduct and patient-safeguarding violations immediately.
- Conduct outreach health services when assigned.
- Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Medical degree as a primary-care physician.
- Valid licence to practise and board certification, equivalent certification or board eligibility.
- At least two years of relevant postgraduate clinical experience after medical college; low-resource-setting experience is preferred.
- Experience in primary healthcare, maternal and child health, obstetrics and gynaecology, communicable and non-communicable diseases, or emergency and outbreak response is preferred.
- Previous NGO experience is preferred.
- Strong organisation, communication, judgement, decision-making and self-motivation.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
- Ability to work effectively across cultures and with limited resources.
- Ability to deploy to emergencies on short notice.
- Fluency in English and local languages. Hausa or Kanuri fluency is a vital practical requirement for this Borno role.
