Position Description & Requirements

ORGANIZATION AND ROLE BACKGROUND

International Medical Corps provides emergency and recovery health services in crisis-affected settings. This national clinical position supports safe, high-quality patient care within assigned health facilities or outreach services in Nigeria.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Medical Doctor will provide overall patient care through triage, history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigations, diagnosis, treatment, referral and health education while protecting patient safety and confidentiality.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide clinical care for acute and chronic conditions using available history, examination, laboratory and imaging information.
  • Conduct daily patient rounds where assigned, document progress and ensure safe clinical handover.
  • Determine when further testing or advanced care is required and initiate timely referrals.
  • Lead case discussions and provide hands-on or didactic training to clinical staff.
  • Identify team training gaps and advocate for appropriate capacity development.
  • Use approved data tools, analyse service information and support improvements in quality of care.
  • Implement infection-prevention and control precautions in line with Ministry of Health and international standards.
  • Participate in 24-hour health-service delivery and shift schedules where applicable.
  • Follow international standards for patient assessment, diagnosis and prescribing.
  • Supervise clinical personnel when assigned and support recruitment where required.
  • Provide health education concerning diagnoses, diet, physical activity, hygiene, vaccination and disease prevention.
  • Maintain complete clinical records, adequate essential supplies, patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Report code-of-conduct or patient-safeguarding violations immediately.
  • Conduct outreach health services when assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Medical degree as a primary-care physician.
  • Valid licence to practise and board certification or equivalent/board eligibility.
  • Typically at least two years of relevant postgraduate clinical experience.
  • Experience working in low-resource settings is preferred.
  • Experience in primary healthcare, maternal and child health, obstetrics and gynaecology, communicable and non-communicable diseases or emergency/outbreak response is preferred.
  • Previous NGO experience is preferred.

  • Ability to deploy to emergencies on short notice.
  • Fluency in English and local languages; another international language is preferred.
