Position: Medical Doctor

Location: Maiduguri, Borno State

Employment Type: Full-time, onsite

Salary Range: ₦750,000–₦1,000,000 monthly

Reporting Line: Medical Supervisor

Technical Supervisor: Programme Manager

JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Doctor will provide clinical leadership and direct patient care within the Cholera Treatment Unit.

The successful candidate will ensure timely diagnosis, appropriate classification of dehydration, standardised cholera case management, infection prevention and control, emergency treatment and accurate clinical documentation in accordance with Médecins du Monde and national cholera-treatment protocols.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Management

  • Triage and assess patients presenting with suspected or confirmed cholera.
  • Classify patients according to their dehydration status.
  • Initiate and supervise oral rehydration therapy and intravenous-fluid treatment.
  • Prescribe antibiotics for eligible severe cases in accordance with approved guidelines.
  • Prescribe zinc supplementation for eligible children where applicable.
  • Monitor patients’ clinical condition and treatment response.
  • Manage complications and medical emergencies.
  • Arrange timely referral of patients requiring advanced care.
  • Maintain accurate clinical notes, treatment records and patient documentation.
  • Ensure that clinical decisions comply with approved protocols.

Clinical Leadership and Supervision

  • Supervise nurses, community health workers and other Cholera Treatment Unit personnel.
  • Ensure clinical staff correctly apply cholera case-management protocols.
  • Organise patient movement through triage, observation, treatment, recovery and discharge areas.
  • Promote consistent clinical decision-making among team members.
  • Provide bedside coaching and refresher guidance to clinical personnel.
  • Identify gaps in clinical practice and recommend corrective action.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Enforce hand hygiene, appropriate PPE use and chlorine-disinfection procedures.
  • Ensure suspected and confirmed cases are properly isolated.
  • Monitor adherence to environmental-cleaning requirements.
  • Ensure medical waste is safely collected and disposed of.
  • Reduce the risk of cross-infection among patients, caregivers and staff.
  • Ensure medical equipment and treatment areas are properly decontaminated.

Surveillance and Reporting

  • Ensure daily collection and validation of admissions, discharges, recoveries, referrals and deaths.
  • Monitor the Cholera Treatment Unit’s case-fatality rate.
  • Immediately report unusual increases in deaths or severe cases.
  • Participate in epidemiological analysis and outbreak reporting.
  • Submit accurate daily and weekly clinical reports.
  • Communicate clinical challenges to the Medical Supervisor and Programme Manager.

Medical Supplies and Coordination

  • Monitor the availability and appropriate use of ORS, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, PPE and other essential commodities.
  • Coordinate stock monitoring with the pharmacist and Medical Supervisor.
  • Report shortages before they disrupt service delivery.
  • Participate in emergency briefings and medical coordination meetings.
  • Coordinate with surveillance and WASH teams.
  • Maintain professional relationships with health authorities, communities and humanitarian partners.
  • Immediately report security incidents through the appropriate channels.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • MBBS or equivalent recognised medical degree.
  • Valid professional registration and practising licence.
  • At least three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in humanitarian healthcare, outbreak response or health-facility supervision.
  • Experience working with Ministry of Health structures.
  • Experience in cholera management, emergency response or integrated health programming is desirable.
  • Experience supervising multidisciplinary health teams is an advantage.
  • Additional relevant health certification is desirable.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong clinical decision-making ability.
  • Knowledge of cholera treatment and dehydration classification.
  • Strong leadership, supervision and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to work under emergency conditions.
  • Good medical documentation and report-writing ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to analyse clinical and epidemiological information.
  • Cultural sensitivity, flexibility and respect for patients.
  • Readiness to work irregular hours during emergency responses.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Knowledge of Hausa, Kanuri or another local language is an advantage.
