Position: Medical Doctor

Location: Damboa, Borno State

Employment Type: Full-time, onsite

Salary Range: ₦750,000–₦1,000,000 monthly

Reporting Line: Medical Supervisor

Technical Supervisor: Programme Manager

JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Doctor will provide direct clinical care and leadership within the Cholera Treatment Unit in Damboa.

The position is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of suspected and confirmed cholera cases while ensuring that infection-prevention measures and national treatment protocols are consistently followed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Care

  • Triage and medically assess patients presenting at the treatment unit.
  • Classify dehydration as none, mild, moderate or severe.
  • Initiate oral or intravenous rehydration according to clinical findings.
  • Prescribe appropriate additional treatment in accordance with approved guidelines.
  • Manage complications and stabilise medical emergencies.
  • Refer patients requiring higher-level medical intervention.
  • Review patients regularly and adjust treatment when necessary.
  • Ensure that all clinical decisions and treatments are properly documented.
  • Confirm that patients meet the required clinical conditions before discharge.

Clinical Supervision

  • Supervise nurses, community health workers and other clinical team members.
  • Ensure correct application of cholera-management protocols.
  • Organise patient flow from registration and triage through treatment and discharge.
  • Standardise clinical decision-making across the treatment team.
  • Provide coaching and technical guidance to health personnel.
  • Identify clinical-performance gaps and support corrective action.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Enforce strict handwashing, PPE and disinfection procedures.
  • Ensure suspected and confirmed cases are appropriately isolated.
  • Monitor chlorine use and environmental cleaning.
  • Ensure safe disposal of infectious and medical waste.
  • Protect staff, patients and caregivers from healthcare-associated infection.
  • Report IPC failures and immediately initiate corrective measures.

Data and Surveillance

  • Validate daily data on admissions, deaths, recoveries, discharges and referrals.
  • Monitor the case-fatality rate and immediately report increases.
  • Participate in outbreak surveillance and epidemiological reporting.
  • Submit daily and weekly Cholera Treatment Unit reports.
  • Ensure patient information is complete, accurate and confidential.
  • Communicate operational and clinical gaps to supervisors.

Supplies and Coordination

  • Ensure ORS, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, PPE and other essential supplies are available.
  • Monitor stock consumption with the pharmacist and Medical Supervisor.
  • Report low stock levels promptly.
  • Support the organisation of treatment areas during increased caseloads.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and emergency briefings.
  • Liaise with surveillance, WASH and other relevant teams.
  • Maintain effective relationships with local health authorities and humanitarian organisations.
  • Follow all organisational security procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Valid professional registration and practising licence.
  • At least three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in humanitarian healthcare or health-facility supervision.
  • Experience managing cholera or another infectious-disease outbreak is desirable.
  • Experience working with government health structures.
  • Experience providing emergency clinical care.
  • Experience supervising multidisciplinary health personnel is an advantage.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong emergency clinical-management ability.
  • Good understanding of dehydration management and rehydration therapy.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make timely decisions.
  • Good report-writing and documentation ability.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal and coordination skills.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours during emergency operations.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Hausa or Kanuri language ability is an advantage.
