The organisation works to empower vulnerable people, communities and local organisations to become resilient. WEWE is seeking an experienced, results-oriented and highly principled Internal Audit Officer to join its team.

JOB SUMMARY

The Internal Audit Officer will support the review of WEWE’s financial transactions, internal controls, risk-management processes, governance systems and compliance procedures.

The successful candidate will conduct financial reviews, identify risks, investigate suspected fraudulent practices and provide recommendations to strengthen accountability and safeguard organisational and donor assets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out pre-review and post-review of financial expenditures and supporting documents.
  • Contribute to the improvement of WEWE’s internal control, risk-management and governance processes.
  • Conduct monthly reviews and evaluations of financial records, reports and bank reconciliation statements.
  • Ensure that WEWE and donor-funded assets are properly safeguarded.
  • Review inventory records to ensure they are updated, complete and accurate.
  • Support the identification of organisational and financial risks.
  • Report identified risks promptly to the appropriate authority and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Investigate suspected fraudulent practices, financial irregularities and missing assets.
  • Prepare reports reflecting audit results and the documents reviewed.
  • Document audit procedures and prepare audit findings memoranda.
  • Conduct follow-up audits to monitor management’s implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Support the delivery of fraud awareness and prevention training for staff.
  • Maintain proper records of internal audit assignments and findings.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma in Accounting or another relevant social science discipline.
  • Applicants with a First Class, Second Class Upper, Distinction or Upper Credit qualification will have an added advantage.
  • Must be a full member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria or an equivalent professional accounting body.
  • Additional professional courses or certifications will be an advantage.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of two to three years of relevant experience in an audit firm performing similar responsibilities.
  • Practical experience participating in statutory audits or audits of local non-governmental organisations.
  • Strong experience supporting audit assignments and preparing final audit reports.
  • Experience reviewing financial documents, expenditure records and bank reconciliation statements.
  • Knowledge of internal controls, risk management, governance and fraud-prevention procedures.
  • Understanding of programme management, donor reporting requirements and donor relations.
  • Experience conducting audits for projects funded by the Ford Foundation, United States Government or other international donors is an added advantage.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Strong audit-report writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks accounting software.
  • Strong knowledge of financial controls, compliance and risk management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify financial irregularities and recommend corrective actions.
  • High level of integrity, accountability and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to supporting vulnerable people, widows and orphans.
