Position Description & Requirements

Global Village Healthcare Initiative for Africa is recruiting a Health Officer to support its health, hygiene-promotion and disease-prevention activities in Borno State.

The Health Officer will lead community hygiene and sanitation interventions, supervise field teams, support cholera-prevention activities and promote positive health practices within targeted communities.

The successful candidate will report to the Health and Nutrition Manager and Project Manager.

Contract Duration

Three months.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise Community-Led Total Sanitation and CATI field teams during the implementation of public-health and WASH activities.
  • Plan, coordinate and monitor hygiene-promotion, sanitation and public-health interventions.
  • Conduct hygiene education, household visits, community-engagement sessions and behaviour-change activities.
  • Support cholera prevention, household disinfection and other outbreak-response activities.
  • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job mentoring to community volunteers, hygiene promoters and field staff.
  • Promote proper waste management, environmental sanitation and appropriate latrine use.
  • Work with local authorities, health facilities, community leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Support the identification, referral and follow-up of suspected cholera cases.
  • Monitor field activities and ensure compliance with safeguarding, health and safety requirements.
  • Collect, verify and submit beneficiary information, monitoring tools and activity reports.
  • Identify programme implementation challenges and recommend practical solutions.
  • Support programme assessments, planning meetings and project-review sessions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Community Health, Environmental Health, Epidemiology or a related discipline.
  • Registration with the relevant professional regulatory body, where applicable.
  • Minimum of two to three years of experience in public health, disease surveillance, emergency-health programming or outbreak response.
  • Previous experience in cholera response, CATI implementation, hygiene promotion or WASH-in-health activities is desirable.
  • Experience working with government health institutions, humanitarian organisations and community structures.
  • Additional training in cholera management, Infection Prevention and Control or emergency-health programming is an advantage.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of cholera transmission, prevention and control measures.
  • Understanding of disease surveillance and case-investigation procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train community volunteers.
  • Good report-writing and data-management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Kobo, CommCare or similar data-collection tools.
  • Ability to work in remote and hard-to-reach locations.
  • Fluency in Hausa or Kanuri and working knowledge of English.
