The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture is a not-for-profit agricultural research organisation developing innovations that address hunger, poverty and natural-resource challenges in Africa.

JOB SUMMARY

The Field Worker III will support cassava field research, digital phenotyping, data management, laboratory work and tissue-culture operations under the postharvest physiological deterioration project.

  • Contract: Two-year renewable contract
  • Location: Ibadan, Oyo State
  • Applicants: Suitable Nigerian nationals

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support cassava field establishment, crop maintenance, harvesting and post-harvest work.
  • Collect agronomic, phenotypic and postharvest-deterioration data from trials and breeding populations.
  • Monitor field plots and breeding materials and record observations.
  • Handle, transport and document research materials between field, laboratory and screenhouse.
  • Capture, annotate and quality-check cassava-root images.
  • Record, organise, clean, validate and securely store field and laboratory data using approved tools.
  • Maintain accurate research-activity records.
  • Support routine laboratory and tissue-culture procedures.
  • Assist with media preparation, labelling, sterilisation, sample handling and consumables.
  • Support multiplication, maintenance and acclimatisation of tissue-culture materials.
  • Keep workspaces, samples, cultures and equipment safe and organised.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • SSCE/O’Level.
  • At least two years’ relevant experience in laboratory operations, fieldwork, data collection or research.
  • Agricultural or research-project experience is advantageous.
  • Ability to work in laboratory, screenhouse and field environments.
  • Basic knowledge of data collection and data management.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel proficiency.
  • Strong attention to detail, teamwork, communication and record-keeping skills.
