Position Description & Requirements

ORGANIZATION AND PROGRAMME BACKGROUND

Street Child works to ensure that children are safe, in school and learning, with particular attention to vulnerable children and communities affected by poverty, displacement and crisis.

The Lagos education programme aims to improve enrolment, retention and learning outcomes by strengthening teachers, instructional practices, accelerated learning and inclusive education.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Education Specialist will lead the design, delivery and quality assurance of teaching-and-learning interventions for children in Lagos.

The specialist will strengthen teachers through training, coaching, mentoring and performance monitoring. The role will also support teachers to address learning loss, improve classroom practices and help vulnerable children enrol, remain in school and succeed.

The specialist must ensure that programme interventions create safe, inclusive and protective learning environments that comply with Street Child’s safeguarding standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN AND QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Design and oversee accelerated-learning and street-corner targeted-instruction interventions.
  • Focus instruction on foundational literacy and numeracy for in-school and out-of-school children.
  • Develop and adapt training modules, teaching-session plans and teacher manuals.
  • Consult the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board during development and adaptation of instructional materials.
  • Align instructional content with state and national curriculum standards.
  • Ensure teaching materials and approaches comply with inclusive-education policies.

TEACHER TRAINING AND COACHING

  • Develop and deliver initial teacher-training programmes.
  • Organize regular refresher training and on-the-job coaching.
  • Introduce and monitor targeted instruction in participating classrooms.
  • Support teachers to group learners according to current learning levels and adapt instruction accordingly.
  • Facilitate termly Communities of Practice where teachers share effective practices and address implementation challenges.
  • Train and coach teachers in explicit teaching, appropriate use of examples and repeated exposure to new learning.
  • Conduct regular student assessments using Early Grade Reading Assessment, Early Grade Mathematics Assessment and upper-primary assessment tools.
  • Support lesson planning, classroom assessment and instructional delivery.
  • Facilitate classroom observation, peer learning and targeted feedback among teachers.

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

  • Embed inclusive pedagogical approaches in participating classrooms.
  • Address learners’ language, gender and disability-related needs.
  • Work with Learning Managers and School Management Committees to institutionalize inclusive practices.
  • Support appropriate infrastructure adaptations where required.
  • Collaborate with the Evidence and Evaluation Unit to collect, analyse and use programme data.
  • Use real-time evidence to guide instructional improvements.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

  • Work with implementing partners, school leaders, community officers and education authorities.
  • Promote effective and sustainable implementation of programme interventions.
  • Advocate for adoption of proven instructional practices within state education systems.
  • Prepare accurate written and verbal reports for the programme’s impact investor and Lagos SUBEB.
  • Maintain productive working relationships with government, schools, communities and other education stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Education, Curriculum Development, International Development, Social Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience in teacher professional development, curriculum implementation and improvement of learning outcomes.
  • Experience in diverse or low-resource education settings is desirable.
  • Experience designing and delivering teacher training, coaching and mentoring.
  • Knowledge of accelerated learning, foundational learning, inclusive education and competency-based teaching.
  • Experience implementing education programmes in schools and communities.
  • Experience using digital information to monitor progress and improve programme quality.
  • Experience working with government, schools, communities and education stakeholders.
  • Experience implementing Teaching at the Right Level approaches.
  • Experience assessing learners with EGRA and EGMA tools.
  • Knowledge of Lagos State and neighbouring areas.
  • Experience working with Lagos SUBEB or the state education system is desirable.
  • Experience delivering payment-by-results programmes and meeting donor-reporting requirements is desirable.
