Position Description & Requirements
Save the Children International is recruiting an Education Coordinator to provide technical leadership, quality assurance and coordination for Education in Emergencies interventions under an ECHO-funded project in Yobe State.
The position is a full-time role with a one-year contract and the possibility of extension. The Education Coordinator will report to the Programme Manager and maintain a technical reporting relationship with the Head of Education or Education Technical Adviser.
The successful candidate will supervise Education Officers and Education in Emergencies Officers.
Role Purpose
The Education Coordinator will ensure that education interventions are technically sound, inclusive, safe and consistent with the approved programme design, ECHO requirements and recognised Education in Emergencies standards.
The coordinator will oversee interventions including the Accelerated Basic Education Programme, Literacy Boost, Numeracy Boost, Teaching at the Right Level, Catch-Up Clubs, inclusive education and safe learning environments.
The position will support improved learning outcomes, safe access to education and the transition of children into formal education while ensuring integration with Child Protection, MHPSS and WASH interventions.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership and Programme Quality
- Lead the technical implementation and continuous improvement of Education in Emergencies activities.
- Ensure that all interventions comply with the approved proposal, donor requirements and implementation plans.
- Provide oversight for Accelerated Basic Education, Teaching at the Right Level, Literacy Boost, Numeracy Boost and Catch-Up Clubs.
- Ensure that programmes improve foundational literacy, numeracy, enrolment, retention and transition outcomes.
- Align activities with INEE Minimum Standards, Safe Schools principles and gender-equality and disability-inclusion frameworks.
- Promote disability screening, differentiated instruction and appropriate assistive support.
Programme Implementation
- Support field teams and implementing partners to translate programme designs into realistic implementation plans.
- Oversee the mapping of out-of-school children, enrolment campaigns and transition pathways.
- Support the establishment and management of learning spaces and Accelerated Basic Education centres.
- Oversee remedial education and structured learning activities.
- Support teacher deployment, classroom supervision and improvement of teaching practices.
- Ensure that psychosocial support, safeguarding and protection referral pathways are integrated into education activities.
- Promote safe, gender-responsive and disability-inclusive learning environments.
Teacher Development
- Lead technical training and continuous professional development for teachers.
- Strengthen teachers’ understanding of Accelerated Basic Education methodologies and curricula.
- Provide technical support on Teaching at the Right Level, Literacy Boost and Numeracy Boost.
- Promote inclusive teaching methods and Universal Design for Learning.
- Build teachers’ capacity in classroom-based psychosocial support and positive discipline.
- Establish teacher coaching, mentoring and classroom-observation systems.
- Ensure that teachers can safely identify and refer child-protection concerns.
Learning Assessment and Results
- Support the implementation of learning assessments, including ASER, EGRA, EGMA and Teaching at the Right Level tools.
- Strengthen continuous classroom assessment and learning-outcome tracking.
- Monitor enrolment, retention, transition and learning gains.
- Work with the MEAL team to ensure accurate tracking of programme indicators.
- Promote the use of programme evidence and assessment findings for adaptive management and decision-making.
Partner Support and Capacity Strengthening
- Provide technical guidance to implementing partners involved in the project.
- Strengthen partners’ knowledge of Education in Emergencies methodologies, pedagogy, safeguarding and inclusive education.
- Build partners’ capacity in learning assessments and data use.
- Conduct technical field visits, joint monitoring exercises and programme-review meetings.
Integration and Coordination
- Ensure close integration between Education, Child Protection, MHPSS, WASH and cash-based interventions.
- Coordinate with State Universal Basic Education Boards, Ministries of Education and Local Government Education Authorities.
- Participate in Education Cluster or Education in Emergencies Working Group meetings.
- Engage school-based management committees, parent-teacher associations, community leaders and other local stakeholders.
- Strengthen school-safety systems, community-engagement structures and protection-referral pathways.
Safe and Inclusive Learning Environments
- Ensure that education activities comply with child-safeguarding standards.
- Promote education services that are gender-responsive and accessible to children with disabilities.
- Ensure programming is risk-informed, conflict-sensitive and appropriate to the local context.
- Support the implementation of Safe Schools principles and school-safety plans.
Monitoring, Documentation and Learning
- Document good practices, innovations, case studies and lessons learned.
- Provide accurate and evidence-based information for internal and donor reports.
- Facilitate programme-learning and reflection sessions.
- Use monitoring findings to improve programme quality and implementation.
Team Management
- Supervise, coach and manage the performance of Education in Emergencies staff.
- Identify staff-capacity gaps and prepare structured development plans.
- Promote quality, learning, accountability and effective teamwork.
Representation and Advocacy
- Represent the Education team during coordination meetings, technical forums and government engagements.
- Contribute to advocacy for safe and inclusive education for children affected by emergencies.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Arts, Social Sciences or a related field.
- Experience managing integrated programmes involving education, child protection, child-rights governance or disaster-risk reduction.
- At least five years of programme-implementation experience.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a supervisory or quasi-management role within an international NGO.
- Experience using partnership approaches is desirable.
- Experience working with local organisations, state authorities and local government institutions is an advantage.
- Strong analytical, strategic-planning and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, coaching and interpersonal skills.
- Strong computer, documentation, time-management and planning skills.
- Ability to work with people from different cultures and professional backgrounds.
- Willingness to travel and work in hard-to-reach areas.
- Willingness to work additional hours during humanitarian emergencies.
