JOB SUMMARY
The Driver will provide safe and reliable transportation for Save the Children staff, visitors, equipment and programme materials.
The successful candidate will also ensure that assigned vehicles are properly maintained, vehicle records are updated and all official journeys comply with Save the Children’s safety and fleet-management procedures.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Transport authorised staff, visitors, equipment and programme materials safely.
- Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks and fuel-consumption records.
- Record the mileage, fuel usage and purpose of every official journey.
- Ensure that all vehicle journeys receive prior authorisation from the appropriate line manager.
- Keep vehicle registration documents, permits and other required documents valid and updated.
- Ensure that vehicle keys and documents are stored securely when the vehicle is not in use.
- Ensure that the driver and all passengers wear seat belts during every journey.
- Observe Save the Children’s approved speed limits and road-safety procedures.
- Report accidents immediately and ensure that the required accident documentation is completed.
- Conduct vehicle inspections before and after every official journey.
- Check that vehicle tools, safety items and equipment are available and functioning properly.
- Identify and report vehicle defects, damage and repair requirements.
- Supervise approved maintenance and repair work on assigned vehicles.
- Ensure that assigned vehicles are kept clean and tidy.
- Comply with vehicle-visibility and branding protocols.
- Provide transportation and logistics support during emergencies when required.
- Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism when transporting staff and visitors.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Secondary School Certificate Examination qualification.
- Valid Nigerian driving licence.
- Minimum of two years of professional driving experience with a reputable organisation, government agency, corporate organisation or international NGO.
- Experience working in a relatively insecure environment.
- Trade test certificate is desirable.
- Experience as a mechanic or auto-electrician is highly desirable.
- Ability to communicate in English and other Nigerian languages.
- Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

- Good knowledge of Kano and surrounding road networks.
