ROLE PURPOSE

The Driver will safely transport Malaria Consortium employees, visitors, documents and goods, support scheduled project movements, and keep assigned vehicles roadworthy, secure and properly documented. The role also provides route and security information to the logistics team and carries out minor vehicle-maintenance tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safe Transport and Conduct

  • Transport staff, visitors and goods safely as directed by the line manager.
  • Carry a valid driving licence and personal identification at all times.
  • Follow Nigerian traffic regulations, speed limits, road-risk conditions and Malaria Consortium vehicle procedures.
  • Ensure every passenger wears a seat belt.
  • Protect assigned vehicles and park them only in approved, secure locations.
  • Report accidents immediately to the line manager and the nearest police station for insurance purposes.
  • Assist with loading, off-loading, mail delivery, bill payments, staff or visitor pick-ups and similar authorised duties.
  • Conduct all assignments professionally, efficiently and in a manner that reflects positively on Malaria Consortium.

Vehicle Maintenance and Records

  • Conduct daily, weekly and monthly vehicle checks.
  • Check fuel, engine oil, coolant, lights, tyres, horn, tools, equipment, brakes, windows and mirrors before departure.
  • Keep vehicles clean internally and externally and ensure fuel tanks are maintained at the required level.
  • Update movement and fuel-consumption logbooks promptly and accurately.
  • Submit logbooks when requested to support monthly vehicle and fuel reports.
  • Confirm that vehicle insurance and licences remain valid.
  • Alert the line manager when maintenance or servicing is due and report faults immediately.
  • Prepare vehicles and any required trip materials, including additional fuel, spare tyres, flags, stickers and medical or food kits, before field journeys.

Security and Communication

  • Ensure vehicle radio and other communication equipment are operational.
  • Maintain regular radio communication with the base while travelling.
  • Follow programme-area security guidance and Malaria Consortium security protocols.
  • Help the Logistics Officer gather and assess route-security information.
  • Advise when a route may be unsafe and report security incidents or concerns promptly.
  • Organise journeys efficiently to reduce unnecessary fuel use and vehicle wear.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Minimum O’ Level certificate.
  • Valid driving licence.
  • At least five years’ previous professional driving experience.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Honest, hardworking and reliable, with a pleasant manner and effective interpersonal skills.

Desirable

  • Basic mechanical knowledge.
  • Willingness to learn and follow security protocols.
