ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Lindii Peace Foundation (LPF) is a Nigerian non-profit and non-governmental organisation working with vulnerable communities.

POSITION DETAILS

  • Employment type: Short-term contract
  • Duration: One month
  • Duty stations: Yola North, Yola South, Fufure and Gire LGAs, Adamawa State
  • Reports to: WASH Supervisor

JOB PURPOSE

The Community Hygiene Promoter will support community-based hygiene-promotion activities intended to improve knowledge, attitudes and practices relating to safe water, sanitation, personal hygiene and disease prevention. The role works directly with households, community leaders, women and youth groups and other community structures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct hygiene-promotion and awareness sessions for communities and targeted households.
  • Mobilise community members for hygiene and sanitation activities.
  • Promote proper handwashing, safe water handling and storage, environmental cleanliness and appropriate sanitation practices.
  • Conduct household visits and provide practical hygiene education based on identified needs.
  • Demonstrate correct handwashing and other key hygiene practices where required.
  • Support community campaigns, sensitisation sessions and hygiene-promotion events.
  • Identify and report concerns relating to hygiene, sanitation, water access and other WASH issues.
  • Support the distribution and correct use of hygiene materials and supplies where applicable.
  • Engage community leaders, volunteers, WASH committees, women’s groups, youth groups and other community structures.
  • Encourage community ownership and sustained adoption of safe hygiene and sanitation practices.
  • Collect activity, attendance, household-visit and community-feedback information accurately.
  • Maintain records and submit timely activity reports to the supervisor.
  • Communicate community feedback, complaints and suggestions through established accountability mechanisms.
  • Ensure activities are inclusive and accessible to women, men, children, older persons, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
  • Report safeguarding, protection, security or other serious concerns immediately.
  • Perform other related hygiene-promotion and WASH duties assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum Secondary School Certificate (SSCE). OND/HND in Environmental Health, Public Health, Community Development, Social Sciences or a related field is an advantage.
  • Previous hygiene-promotion, community-mobilisation, health-education, WASH or humanitarian/community-programming experience is desirable.
  • Experience conducting community sensitisation or household-level awareness activities.
  • Understanding of basic hygiene, sanitation and disease-prevention practices.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate in relevant local languages used in the target communities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a field team.
  • Willingness to work extensively in communities and field locations.
  • Previous NGO or humanitarian experience is an advantage.
