Save the Children is recruiting a Community Health Mobilization Assistant to support the implementation of health and nutrition activities in project communities in Yobe State.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Community Health Mobilization Assistant will provide support to Community-Based Health Volunteers working in different project communities.

The successful candidate will support the implementation of health interventions using Social and Behaviour Change approaches.

The role will involve working closely with community and religious leaders, women’s groups, men’s groups, youth groups, Ward Development Committees and other community structures to ensure the effective delivery of health interventions.

The Community Health Mobilization Assistant will also supervise the day-to-day activities of Community Health Volunteers and ensure that activities are implemented in line with Save the Children’s standards and project targets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Community Mobilization and Engagement

  • Conduct community-entry activities with technical support from senior project team members.
  • Participate in the sensitization of community leaders and religious leaders on project objectives, planned activities and expectations.
  • Work closely with community leaders and relevant community structures to identify suitable Community Health Volunteers using the established selection criteria.
  • Engage community members, internally displaced persons committees, women’s associations, youth groups and children in designing participatory strategies to address priority health concerns.
  • Support community members to identify practical solutions to priority health issues affecting women, children and vulnerable households.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with community leaders, religious leaders, women’s groups, youth groups and other stakeholders.

Community Support Groups

  • Support the establishment and strengthening of Mother-to-Mother Support Groups.
  • Support the establishment and strengthening of Father-to-Father Support Groups.
  • Coordinate the selection of lead mothers and lead fathers.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of community support groups.
  • Provide technical support to the groups in line with the Community Health Influencers, Promoters and Services manual.
  • Support Community Health Volunteers to develop monthly action plans based on the approved project work plan.

Community Health Volunteer Support

  • Provide regular technical supervision to Community Health Volunteers.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching to volunteers during support-group sessions and other community activities.
  • Ensure that Community Health Volunteers understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Organize and facilitate training for Community Health Volunteers on community health activities and disease surveillance.
  • Support volunteers to correctly document and report support-group activities.
  • Monitor the performance of Community Health Volunteers and provide appropriate guidance where necessary.

Health Promotion and Behaviour Change

  • Promote awareness of appropriate health practices in project communities.
  • Ensure that Social and Behaviour Change materials are properly displayed in supported communities and health facilities.
  • Provide key maternal, newborn, childcare and infant-feeding messages to beneficiaries.
  • Support community-level awareness activities on maternal and child health, nutrition, disease prevention and healthy behaviour.
  • Work with community structures to encourage the use of available health services.

Referral and Disease Surveillance

  • Work closely with Community Health Volunteers to ensure the early identification and referral of sick or vulnerable individuals to health facilities.
  • Support increased community surveillance and reporting of infectious diseases.
  • Organize and facilitate training for volunteers on disease surveillance and community reporting.
  • Identify gaps and challenges affecting access to health services.
  • Coordinate with relevant actors to ensure that safe and confidential services are available and accessible to vulnerable women and children.
  • Identify the special needs of women and refer protection-related concerns to the relevant Protection Officer.

Assessment, Monitoring and Data Collection

  • Support community-level assessments, surveys and other data-collection activities.
  • Maintain records of assessments conducted by government agencies, NGOs and other organizations in project communities.
  • Support the collection of accurate and complete programme data.
  • Develop support-group implementation work plans for assigned Local Government Areas.
  • Develop monthly and quarterly LGA work plans and related budget plans.
  • Monitor community activities against approved project targets and work plans.
  • Conduct quarterly analysis of identified health trends to support programme learning, advocacy and future planning.
  • Maintain proper records of activities and prepare regular reports.
  • Produce weekly updates, situation reports and other programme reports when required.
  • Support the development of case studies and success stories from programme implementation.

Ward Development Committee Support

  • Provide technical support to strengthen Ward Development Committees.
  • Support the organization of biannual Ward Development Committee meetings in collaboration with the project technical team.
  • Work with Ward Development Committees to identify community health priorities and support local solutions.

Safeguarding and Accountability

  • Ensure that all programme activities are implemented in accordance with Save the Children’s safeguarding policies.
  • Recognize and report suspected cases of abuse, neglect, exploitation, harassment or other safeguarding concerns through the approved reporting channels.
  • Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive beneficiary and programme information.
  • Treat children, beneficiaries, colleagues and community members with dignity and respect.

  • Perform other reasonable duties assigned according to the candidate’s skills and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification in Nursing, Nutrition, Public Health or another related field.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of one year of relevant experience in community health mobilization.
  • Previous experience supporting community health, nutrition or public-health programmes is desirable.
  • Experience working with Community Health Volunteers or community-based structures is an advantage.
  • Ability to engage community leaders, religious leaders, women’s groups, youth groups and other local stakeholders.
  • Ability to organize training, sensitization meetings and community awareness activities.
  • Good understanding of community health promotion and Social and Behaviour Change approaches.
  • Ability to collect, document and report programme data accurately.
  • Ability to supervise and provide on-the-job guidance to Community Health Volunteers.
  • Good communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in project communities and challenging field environments.
  • Strong commitment to child safeguarding, accountability and humanitarian principles.
