JOB SUMMARY
The Communications Assistant will support the Brand and Communications Unit in providing quality communications, visibility and documentation support for the Emergency Response Fund project and other programme teams in Borno State.
The successful candidate will support social media management, media relations, content gathering, documentation and the tracking of communications outputs. The role will also serve as a brand focal point in the Maiduguri office.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the implementation of communications plans for the Emergency Response Fund project and other programme activities in Borno State.
- Gather, draft and organise field content, including human-interest stories, photographs, quotes, captions, case studies and programme updates.
- Ensure that informed consent and safeguarding requirements are followed when gathering and publishing content.
- Develop draft social media posts, captions, content calendars and visual briefs.
- Track the engagement and performance of published social media content.
- Maintain media contact lists and support press engagements.
- Assist with drafting media materials and tracking media coverage.
- Maintain documentation and tracking systems for communications requests, field visits, visibility materials, content approvals and media coverage.
- Review visibility materials and advise programme teams and partners on the correct use of Plan International’s logo and brand.
- Support the development of newsletters, factsheets, briefs, reports, presentations and success stories.
- Coordinate with field teams to identify communications opportunities and document project achievements.
- Capture evidence of programme impact for internal and external audiences.
- Ensure that communications activities comply with safeguarding, dignity, consent, data protection and ethical storytelling standards.
- Ensure that children, programme participants and community members are represented with dignity and accuracy.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Degree or Higher National Diploma in Communication, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Development Communication, English, Social Sciences or a related field.
- Completion of the National Youth Service Corps programme is compulsory.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience in communications, documentation, media relations, social media management, content gathering or visibility support.
- Experience in a humanitarian or development organisation is preferred.
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Ability to develop clear stories, captions, reports and updates for different audiences.
- Good understanding of photography, videography, informed consent, safeguarding and ethical documentation.
- Experience supporting social media content development, media monitoring and communications tracking.
- Experience working in Borno State or a humanitarian response setting is desirable.
- Experience working with internally displaced persons and vulnerable communities is an advantage.
- Working knowledge of basic design tools, social media platforms and Microsoft Office applications.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- Good photography and videography knowledge.
- Ability to manage social media content and communications calendars.
- Good documentation and record-management skills.
- Ability to work with programme teams, partners and media representatives.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information responsibly.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and Hausa.
- Knowledge of Kanuri or another local language spoken in Borno State is an advantage.
- Commitment to safeguarding, dignity, consent and ethical storytelling.
