ORGANIZATION AND PROGRAMME BACKGROUND
Jhpiego is a nonprofit global-health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University.
Nigeria continues to experience high levels of preventable maternal and newborn mortality. Major maternal causes include pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, obstructed labour, postpartum haemorrhage, puerperal sepsis and complications of abortion. Important causes of newborn mortality include birth asphyxia, neonatal sepsis and prematurity.
With funding from the United States Government through the Department of State, Jhpiego is providing technical assistance to the Government of Nigeria to strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers serving supported primary-healthcare facilities.
ROLE PURPOSE
The assignment will support delivery of Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care capacity building for doctors, nurses, midwives and Community Health Extension Workers.
Master trainers will help strengthen healthcare-worker competencies in essential maternal and newborn services and improve the quality of care provided during pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the postnatal period.
TECHNICAL AREAS
- Antenatal-care services, including Group Antenatal Care, aligned with current guidance.
- Management of labour and childbirth using the national Labour Care Guide.
- Prevention, early identification and management of prolonged or obstructed labour.
- Recognition and management of maternal and foetal distress.
- Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care signal functions.
- Quality service provision for women and newborns during pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the postnatal period.
