ORGANIZATION AND PROJECT BACKGROUND
FHI 360 UK-Nigeria is part of the FHI 360 family of companies and supports programme implementation, project management and advisory, technical and operational services for humanitarian, development, public-health, education and social-impact initiatives.
Northeast Nigeria continues to face a humanitarian crisis affecting internally displaced people and host communities. FHI 360 UK and FHI 360 UK-Nigeria are expanding activities in Borno State to support integrated WASH, health, nutrition and protection interventions.
ROLE PURPOSE
The Assistant Technical Officer, Nurse/Midwife will provide nursing and midwifery care, treatment and patient follow-up according to medical prescriptions, clinical protocols and universal hygiene standards. The post holder will support women during pregnancy, childbirth and the post-delivery period and provide antenatal and postnatal advice to women and their families.
The position reports to the Technical Officer, Health and Nutrition Services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with a multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality care to vulnerable patients.
- Receive and settle patients appropriately and assist people who have limited autonomy with feeding, hygiene, movement and comfort.
- Triage patients in waiting areas, wards and emergencies, identify priority cases, provide first aid and refer patients to the doctor when required.
- Promote, implement and monitor universal hygiene standards and precautions.
- Organize and provide care and treatment according to medical prescriptions.
- Assist during consultations, daily clinical rounds and other medical procedures.
- Provide health education to patients and their families when necessary.
- Conduct admission, surveillance and follow-up and identify deterioration or emergency conditions.
- Complete and supervise patient files, forms, registers, statistics and other administrative records.
- Work with Community Health Extension Workers and Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife volunteers and support capacity building.
- Comply with professional codes of conduct and ethics.
- Participate in outreach and community-health activities.
- Participate in continuing professional development, including training and mentoring.
- Plan patient care with the site doctor.
- Provide direct nursing care, including intravenous medication, wound dressing and clinical observations.
- Clean and sterilize reusable equipment appropriately.
- Maintain accurate patient-care, consumables and instrument records.
- Ensure high-quality nursing and midwifery services across project sites.
- Work with technical-support and monitoring and evaluation teams to collect baseline data.
- Compile and submit periodic reports.
- Maintain infection-prevention and control measures.
- Perform other assigned duties.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing or Midwifery.
- Between one and three years of relevant post-NYSC experience.
- Registration as a Nurse or Midwife with a valid practising licence is mandatory.
- An additional public-health certificate or closely related qualification from a government-recognized institution is an advantage.
- Previous clinical or maternity-setting experience is an asset.
- Familiarity with Nigerian public-sector health systems, NGOs and community-based organizations is highly desirable.
- Previous experience working in a humanitarian crisis is highly desirable.
